Introduction

Many people in the society especially the learned always tends to resist any change that does happen around them or in the society. The use of the new electronic health records has always brought controversy for the people who are new to the system. Perhaps, it is very vivid that the notion of change can easily create resistance that can make the working environment unstable. Therefore, to enact the change, it is very much essential for the facility to train us on the new technology. Rodgers (2003) created the diffusion of the innovation theory which provides the educators with the idea of anxiety that is associated with change and the possible measures that can be taken to counter the issue. Therefore, to respond to the issue raised by the nurses, the various principles created by Rodgers will be of aid to the institution.

Compatibility

More to just ensuring that the nurses see the benefits of the new EHR system, the issue of compatibility should also be stressed. According to Rodgers, compatibility is perhaps the degree to which an innovation is perceived as persistence with the value, the experience and the needs of the adapters. Therefore, if the change is compatible to the individual needs and in this case is the nurse’s needs, there will be reduced uncertainty, and the adoption of the innovation will increase. The educators should consider the issue of compatibility.

Simplicity

It is apparent that new technology comes with some complication on how to use the system and thus will compile to the other matter about change. According to Rodgers, the innovation perceived to be as difficult or complicated to handle will face more resistance as compared to the one that is perceived to be simple. Therefore, one of the ways to reduce and lower the stress level among the nurses is to promise them that the specialized trained personnel will be around in the health care and will be available for them in case they should have any problem with the system (Ghahramani, Lendel, Haque & Sawruk, 2009). The availability of the support staff who will be handling any technical problem will reduce the tension in the system from the nurses.

Trialability

The important aspects of the implementation of the new EHR are the education and training. Moreover, there should be other resources online to allow the nurse to have a learning environment or rather a playground where they will be able to play with some of the features of the system without any fear (Rodgers, 2003). Trialability is the degree to which an innovation may be put to the test or perhaps may be experimented on a limited basis. These techniques will, therefore, build confidence among the nurses with the new system that is coming from the institution because they are now getting familiar with the system before the actual time comes. This medium will reduce some of the uncertainty that has risen against the incoming technology.

Observable results

There has been a saying in our society that ‘’ seeing is believing’’ and this can be very useful in this kind of situation. According to Rodgers (2003), Observability is the degree to which the outcomes of the innovation are perhaps visible to others. The nurses should be made to understand that others in the institution are using the technology and are moving along with the system. The idea will assist to reduce the resistance to change that is perhaps among some of the nurses and other employees. On the other hand, observability is also being defined as the positive correlation with the rate of adoption of the innovation that is on the way to the institution. The best way to do this is to compare how other health cares who have adopted the technology is fairing on with the system.

The relative advantage

Relative advantage is the degree to which the new idea is perceived to be of more importance than the old one which is being replaced, and that is according to Rodgers (2003). Therefore, when explaining the importance to the nurses, the educator should give the idea a punch of being important than the old way that is being replaced. Ideally, the medium will make sure that some of the uncertainty is reduced and the employees will now be ready with the incoming innovation in the health care to improve the service delivery (Saihn, 2006).

Conclusion

The new EHR system implementation has frequently been resisted and has created some fear with the nurses. Therefore, the intervention strategies should be done to counter the fear within the system to reduce the anxiety that occurs due to the change that is entitled to come to the health care. Consequently, a proper education, training and perhaps a positive feedback will, therefore, work better for the creation of confidence and willingness to adopt and embrace the new change that is perhaps to take place in the health care.
