Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum

The summary

The document shows and explains how to remove relevant information from an article in the database and provides an explanation on the structuring of the information to get a comprehensive knowledge that can be applied to obtain knowledge. Therefore, nursing informatics assists in communicating and managing data, information, knowledge and wisdom that come from various relevant sources (Brokel, 2007).

Moreover, to understand how the quantum functions I selected a clinical nursing question to show how I would work with it systematically from data to information, then to knowledge and wisdom. I will then apply the case study of the patient to establish a clinical question. The patient’s name is Mrs. Valarie Bather and has been admitted with the condition of breast cancer in the cook hospital in the states. The patients after having slept in the hospital for some time was diagnosed of Pneumonia and some chest problems. However, the patient seems to be conversant with putting on warm clothes and taking the medication as far as the earlier diagnosis is concerned. Thus for the patient to understand that his new condition is due to the fact of not keeping warm regularly and overexposing herself cold is vital.  The case study established my research question because I was unaware of the relationship between keeping warm and keeping warm daily. Therefore, to begin the investigation, I noticed the fundamental problem of the patients, the earlier treatment, the alternative treatment and perhaps the outcome that I wanted to shun.

Mrs. Valarie’s health details

ProblemPneumonia and chest problems
InterventionThe use of antibiotic and also maintain warm clothes
ResultFirst option: Reduce the chest pain Second option: control death

In the case of Mrs. Valarie, the clinical question developed whether there was a relationship between the putting on warm clothes and the spread of Pneumonia (Mycobacterium pneumonia)

Therefore, as a nurse practitioner, I have come to learn that there is a relationship between keeping warm and the spread of pneumonia bacteria in the body (Labandeira-Rey, Couzon, Boisset, Brown, Bes, Benito & Vandenesch, 2007). The society can avoid the spread of such bacteria if they can keep themselves warm during the cold conditions and this can save them a great deal of not contracting the condition more often that can lead to death if not treated. Trying to make sure that cold does not enter your body to trigger the spread of bacteria is the very essential method in keeping and maintaining good health in conjunction with the other methods.

Moreover, I would obtain other relevant information through searching the databases on the topical issue of cold and pneumonia. Then I will tabulate the information to the charts and graphs to reveal the relationship between the research variables and the effects of the condition on the patients. From there, I will take the information that has been gleaned to turn it into knowledge that can be used and applied through analyzing and establishing the relationship between cold and pneumonia. I will then validate the rationale and transform the information to logical facts of knowledge (American Nurses Association, 2001).

I would then take the initiative of gaining wisdom by applying the knowledge acquired too, therefore, explain and manage the situation in the nursing practice at the health care. I would take the initiative to plan a program of fighting Pneumonia by respecting the weather changes by putting on the right clothes at the right time. Therefore, informatics can be used to obtain wisdom (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2014). It assisted the nurse practitioner to acquire nursing information that can be used to solve the human problems like in the case study. For example, I have use nurse informatics to obtain some data and then analyzed the health records to attain a decision that can assist the patients. Therefore, I would progress from the use of artificial and gazed knowledge to the practical data collection to obtain the wisdom.
